Copyright infringement is a violation of the Copyright Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. C-42) and may result in legal consequences. Under Canadian law, individuals or entities found guilty of copyright infringement may be subject to statutory damages of up to $20,000 per work infringed for willful infringement, as well as additional financial penalties and legal action. In cases of commercial infringement, offenders may face criminal charges, fines, and potential imprisonment of up to five years.
